Popular dietary supplements Ginkgo biloba extract and magnetized water may provide some health benefits for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, according to a new study from the University of Cincinnati Colleague of Medicine. In this study, Ginkgo biloba extract and magnetized water were found to improve antioxidant status associated with type 2 diabetes and reduce oxidative stress caused by this condition.
In diabetic rats, Ginkgo biloba extract has a good effect on insulin-producing islet cells in the pancreas-------- creating a recovery effect similar to that of a healthy, non-diabetic rat, said Helal Fouad Hetta, a Ph.D. researcher in digestive systems at the University of Cincinnati Colleague of Medicine.
In addition, magnetized water, which is magnetized through magnetic fields, has also been reported to help lower the glycemic index of diabetic rats, while improving antioxidant status and blood lipid levels.
In the latest study, "Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity: Targeting and Therapy," researchers first fed rats with high-fat feed for eight weeks, then injected a single low-dose streptococcus in the abdominal cavity, which is toxic to beta cells that secrete insulin in the mammalian pancreas. After inducing diabetes, the number of cells in rats decreased and insulin secretion decreased.
The researchers randomly divided 40 rats into four groups: non-diabetic control groups and 3 diabetes groups. One group of diabetic rats was a positive control, and the other 2 groups were oral Ginkgo biloba water lifts and magnetized water for 4 weeks. The results showed that the number of pancreatic beta cells and insulin concentrations in the diet of diabetic rats increased significantly, almost back to normal levels, especially in Ginkgo biloba extract groups.
Moreover, Ginkgo biloba and magnetized water both improved antioxidant status in diabetic rats and reduced oxidative stress associated with type 2 diabetes. The researchers stressed that this was achieved by lowering the two antioxidant enzymes glutathione and superoxide dismutase in pancreatic tissue.
But Dr. Helal FOUAD HETTA notes that the effects of Ginkgo biloba extract on type 2 diabetes are still in preliminary research and need to be tested in large-scale human clinical trials. In addition, the researchers recommend taking Ginkgo biloba supplements with caution because they may be toxic and, if consumed, should be taken in capsules or tablets. On the other hand, if the user is currently using the other drug stage, consult a doctor before considering the supplementation of Ginkgo biloba preparations.
In May, a study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) questioned the risk of adulteration containing Ginkgo biloba extract, lack of effectiveness in improving memory and circulation, and risk of bleeding.
